Offenham has a 6 bell simulator using David Bagley's multi bell interface and running Abel software. The bells are slienced using cut outs from old motorbike tyres which are permanently attached to the clappers and just need to be turned to use - the whole process takes about 5 minutes for all 6 bells. The bells are practically inaudible outside the churchyard, but as the clappers swing normally there is very little difference in the 'feel' of the bell.
We regularly use the simulator during one to one bell handling lessons and also for leading and covering practice for individuals or small groups. We sometimes use it for groups to ring specific methods, and occassionally individuals use it for the same purpose with the computer ringing the other bells.
The simulator is now available to anybody who wishes to use it. The idea is that it is available at any time as long as the Church is not in use and there is somebody to let you in and set it up. If you would like to organise a special practice, use it for teaching or ring a quarter peal then please contact Claire. There is no charge for using the simulator, but donations to the bell fund are always welcome and please don't be surprised if the donations box is more prominently displayed than usual. If you are organising a tour in the area and you don't mind the sound being computer generated, Offenham bells will probably be available - at short notice if required.
